Job Description:

Serves as the key point of contact for coding information in the clinic setting, providing feedback and problem resolution. Acts as a liaison between an employed provider (physician and/or advance practice provider) and the Physician Coding department. Coordinates communication and process information between coding, providers, clinic caregivers, clinic leadership, Provider Compensation, Clinical Informatics support, Compliance and Hospital Outpatient department leadership.

Job Requirements:

Licensure, Registration and/or Certification Required:
  • Professional Coder (CPC) certification issued by the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC), or
  • Coding Associate (CCA) certification issued by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA), or
  • Coding Specialist - Physician (CCS-P) certification issued by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA), or
  • Health Information Administrator (RHIA) registration issued by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA), or
  • Health Information Technician (RHIT) registration issued by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA), or
  • Specialty Coding Professional (SCP) certification issued by the Board of Medical Specialty Coding and Compliance (BMSC).
 
 
Education Required:
  • Advanced training beyond High School that includes the completion of an accredited or approved program in Medical Coding Specialist.
 

Experience Required:

 

  • Typically requires 5 years of experience in expert-level professional coding experience and at least 2 years of experience in education/training of licensed providers.  

 
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:

  • Advanced knowledge of ICD, CPT and HCPCS coding guidelines. Advanced knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology and regulatory requirements.
  • Excellent communication (oral and written), adult education and interpersonal skills. Ability to develop rapport and maintain positive, professional relationships primarily with employed physicians and other advance practice providers, but also other caregivers and medical group administrators.
  • Intermediate computer skills including the use of Microsoft office products, electronic mail, including exposure or experience with electronic coding systems or applications.
