Horizon is currently seeking a Desktop Support Technician, for our Madison, WI office, that will support all Horizon companies.

This position provides technical support assisting end users with their day-to-day technical duties and issues.  This position is responsible for supporting the organization’s computing and telecommunication network operations and procedures. The position is responsible for peripheral equipment, networks, communications equipment, and providing support for users’ software and hardware needs.

Essential Job Functions includes the following; however other duties may be assigned other duties as necessary to meet business needs.


1. Technical Support

- Acts as initial contact for all internal and external customer technical support required for computer workstation hardware and software, telephone, network, operating system, printing, and Internet access problems.
 - Duties include answering the help desk phone, recording the call, first level corrective action, problem escalation to second level when necessary.
 - Coordinates activities in support of user training and assistance requests for all programs.
 - Confers with users and IT personnel to develop new approaches or alternatives to ensure that user assistance is being provided effectively and efficiently.
 - Trains users in learning new company-provided applications and assists in problem-solving for applications issues.
 - Maintains records, logs and reports of assistance.
 - Maintains network and PC preventive maintenance logging efforts to ensure network and data integrity.
 - Tests new software applications and provides feedback where required. Trains HD staff on new applications.
 - Develops and writes operational procedures for the department’s HD staff.
 - Administers end-user workstations and supports end-user activities utilizing TCP/IP on a Microsoft Windows-based local area network (LAN).
 - Investigates user problems and identifies their source; determines possible solutions; tests and implements solutions.
 - Installs, configures and maintains personal computers, Windows networks, Apple workstations, file servers, network cabling, and other related equipment, devices and systems; adds or upgrades and configures disk drives, printers and related equipment.
 - Performs and/or oversees software and application installation and upgrades.
 - Audits and documents site licenses for department/organization.
 - Implements network security, including maintaining firewalls, managing host security, file permissions, file system integrity, and adding and deleting users.
 - Develops and conducts various training and instruction for system users on operating systems and other applications; assists users in maximizing use of networks and computing systems.
 - Maintains confidentiality with regard to the information being processed, stored or accessed by the end-users on the network.
 - Assists personnel of other departments as a computer resource.
 - Provides computer orientation to new and existing company staff.

2. Application Support

- Troubleshoots software and mobile data computer problems.
 - Trains users on software and hardware.


3. Computer and Network Maintenance

- Troubleshoots, repairs, maintains, installs and performs testing activities on various computer equipment, peripherals, data communication and computer network systems.
 - Assembles, installs, configures and tests computer equipment or units of local area networks requiring use of standard interface protocols.
 - Completes work orders such as installing equipment, connecting and moving devices or creating components of autonomous networks; installing disk drives; and correcting definitions on data switches, etc.
 - Maintains software and hardware inventory and tracking systems; develops inventory lists, stocks and stores electronic components.
 - Installs cable for phone system. Performs moves, adds, deletes and other changes for phone uses. Sets up calling features such as automatic call distribution (ACD) groups, pick groups, call processing and voice mail. Provides phone support and training to new users and solves miscellaneous phone problems.

1. Education, Work Experience, Licenses, and Certifications:

- Degree in related field or prior network experience or equivalent applicable work experience.
 - Prior Held Desk and PC/LAN experience preferred.
 - Knowledge of computer and/or network security systems, applications, procedures and techniques.

 - Ability to install, configure and maintain personal computers, networks and related hardware and software.
 - Ability to identify and resolve computer system malfunctions and operations problems.
 - Effective organizational and prioritization skills.

 - Windows Server 2012 and above
