Job Description:

~This position supports communicable disease surveillance and outbreak response activities supported by the federal Epidemiologic and Laboratory Capacity (ELC) grant. The Infection Preventionist will provide consultation, education, and infection prevention support for all types of healthcare settings in Wisconsin, including hospitals, long-term care facilities, and ambulatory care centers, as well as programs throughout DPH. This individual will serve as a core member of the Healthcare Associated Infections (HAI) Prevention team, handling a wide range of infection prevention questions and conducting outbreak detection, investigation, and response.
The Infection Preventionist is also responsible for coordinating statewide HAI surveillance conducted in healthcare settings, including but not limited to hospitals, ambulatory surgery centers, dialysis centers, and long-term care facilities, using the National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN). Duties include provision of NHSN training and ongoing technical support to private healthcare partners, data analysis, and preparation of summary HAI surveillance reports for broad distribution. The individual is also responsible for supporting required grantee performance tracking and progress reports by collecting and maintaining the necessary program-related data.
In addition to consultation, surveillance, and outbreak investigation duties, the Infection Preventionist will assist facilities in identifying and implementing new strategies for infection prevention. The Infection Preventionist will also maintain an inventory of licensed healthcare facilities in the state, which will include contact information for each facility infection preventionist. The individual will assist in developing and updating written surveillance and disease response protocols for diseases and will update and maintain communicable disease fact sheets for the general public and the Wisconsin case reporting and investigation protocol (EpiNet)guidance documents used by public health officials and healthcare providers. Additionally, this position will assist with the preparation and execution of the ELC grant application.
