General Description and Classification Standards
The purpose of this job is to serve as the lead person in performing medical health evaluations, nursing and administrative duties within the Corrections department. This is a fully seasoned professional level capable of independently carrying out most assignments typical of the profession.
Performs work under very general supervision with review and advice from Director of Nursing and Agency Medical Director.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Advises medical personnel in charge of each shift to follow up on important information or development regarding patients and any potential health hazards and recommends measures to reduce and prevent disease.
Supervises, directs, and evaluates assigned staff, handling employees’ concerns and solving problems, counseling, disciplining and directing work flow.
Evaluates charts for accuracy and completeness, transcribes orders, submits X-rays for analysis and consultations.
Responds to doctors, physician's assistants and co-workers requesting assistance, receives treatment and medication orders from doctors and guidance from other medical personnel.
Prepares and administers specific medications to patients.
Prioritizes receiving patients’ screening forms from intake for assessment of medical problems, prepares incoming patients to receive medical care.
May make purchasing or resource allocation decisions and apply organizational policies.
Has formal supervisory authority over work group to include discipline, performance management, scheduling, training, etc.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities This is a partial listing of necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the job su ccessfully. It is not an exhaustive list.
Knowledge of medical terminology, practice, and procedures; skills with medical equipment such as resuscitation and oxygen equipment, stethoscope, Accu-check machine, and wheelchairs. Leadership and management skills. Ability to assist in the diagnosis of illness. Ability to effectively communicate with a diverse group of patients and staff.
Minimum Qualifications – Education and Experience
Completion of accredited school of nursing program or BS in Nursing.
2 years experience in professional nursing.
Preferred Education & Experience
Minimum education requirement, plus 2 years experience as a professional nurse in a correctional setting.
Licensures and Certifications
Licensure as a Registered Nurse in Georgia
